To understand the foregoing phrase, it would be best fit if we try to describe the variables involved: the term ‘reality construction’. The words may seem contradicting because according to a realist, real cannot be constructed since it is already ‘out there’, given, concrete or it is a finite thing. Others may argue that to perceive something ‘real’ one should accept that fact that it is a product of human social interaction thus, we came out with a term ‘socially constructed reality’ as pointed out by Berger and Luckmann. This social constructed reality is the biggest influence on what we perceive as reality and how we perceive it, especially in the world as we know it today. The main vehicles which convey this meaning: symbols, including language, cultural myths -- larger social meanings of objects, actions, signs, episodes, the structure and practice of our institutions, our rules for congruent action. These vehicles of meaning together construct: our world-view -- our sense of how the world works, what is valuable, why things are the way they are.
To view reality is something that is also universally accepted knowledge, ideas, actions, events and situation. One classical example is that if all Christians believe that God really exist then He is ‘real’. But this doesn’t hold true if only one person or even group of person would claim that they’d seen Jesus.
But how are these viewed realities become universally acceptable? There must be an agent that affirm or reinforced people’s view towards reality. Is this agent serves only to depict what is real or is it an effective vehicle to construct reality?
The agent that I am talking here refers to the media who serves as an active player in the process of constructing reality. According to John Pungente, the media do not present simple reflections of external reality. Rather, they present carefully crafted constructions that reflect many decisions and result from many determining actors. In his paper Media and the Construction of Reality, Stefan Weber highlighted variations in constructivism: the ontological and empirical approaches, which to him are important basis to understand more how media constructs reality. The common thread between all forms of constructivism is that they do not focus on an ontological reality but instead on a constructed reality. The ontological constructivism presupposes the ‘constructed nature of the world as an unalterable fact’. It means that construction of reality is not something made by a man because it is ‘always there, whether one wants it or not’ or simply Reality-As-It-Is-In-Itself. To apply this in the media context, I look at it as something that media will and will always have construct reality even it is not told to do so. On the other hand, the empirical constructivism as what has been proposed for instance by Walter Benjamin, is concerned with ‘constructiveness as an empirically measurable trend on the basis of a non-dualistic epistemology’. This form of constructivism asserts that media is consciously and deliberately constructs reality to the extent of turning a fiction thing to a ‘real’ thing. However, I will not set an argument between these two forms of constructivism but I will be looking more if it is really possible that media can really present the exact reality or it just merely construct for a human to perceive what is ‘real’.
To some extent I agree with the perspective of constructivism. Its foundation is analytically useful as it focuses on the processes of media’s construction of reality. However, to doubt the possibility of experiencing reality sensually would seem futile. No concrete evidences could deny the fact that reality can indeed be experienced by human beings. But to the level of extent on how media presents reality is that which I am not keen to defend. Therefore, it would be safe to say that media serves dual purposes: to present what is only ‘out there’ – the absolute reality and to re-present ‘something’ to make it real - constructed reality. To illustrate the first function, media include or cover genuine events as newsworthy items. Genuine events are independent from mass media and their reporting, they take place whether the media notices them or not and do not change in character if they do. Such events are natural disasters, crime or incidents of every day life (Scherer et.al). These particular events are reported objectively since media is beyond its control to alter anything while these things unfold and therefore it has to present only the ‘absolute reality’ of the event. On the other hand, all media products such as news and advertisements are said to be a construction of reality. Lang and Lang expose the media’s image of reality as artificial and not at all similar to what witnesses on site observe. This is particularly true in news which is difficult to be a true reflection of reality, due to many factors involved in the production of news. Human error, human interest and the fallacies of management all conspire to blur the line between truth and friction. Potter (1998) stated that “news is not something that happens; instead, news is what gets presented. We almost never see news events as they happen. Instead, we are shown the media’s manufactured construction of the events.” Moreover, the media being an agent of socialization can affect our way of thinking and change our perception of reality. We tend to believe that drinking a certain brand of alcoholic beverages as projected in advertisement can bring us real fun and enjoyment and that acquiring a unit of cellphone makes us to believe that we are “in” a society. All of these perceived realities are reflected by this powerful and influential agent – the media.

Reality...reality...reality.. It's always an issue. In this case, I would like to stand on the side of the media. Now, my point is, before reacting, let's try to know what's really the role of the media. Consider this that media ia a RECORDER. I want to be particular in news. In news, the role of the media is to report what's really the occurences are. For example, regarding the Vizconde massacre, before, the news content was all about the group of Hubert Webb who had been accused guilty by the Paranaque trial court. The verdict against to the group of Hubert led's media to openly report to the public that Hubert Webb and some rest of the group is really guilty. That was the news content 15 years ago (the reality before). But now, after 15 years, the news regarding the Vizconde massacre case is now far different. Today's news is that, the group of Webb is now acquited and found not guilty by our justices (the reality now). The reality before and the reality now about this case is far different. It only shows that news is mercurial. The reality presented by the media is based on facts and informations. And factual basis, is reality. Media doesn't have any fault whether Hubert is guilty or not. Mediua is just after occurences. As what I have said, media a recorder.
ReplyDeleteREALITY, is the state of things as they actually exist, whether observable or comprehensible. BRAIN is the 'mother' of all reality CONSTRUCTION. It generates any form or things that we may perceive whether in the past, present (based in experienced) and even the abstract things.
ReplyDeleteHistorically, philosophers have sometimes considered reality to include nonexistent things and agent such as Media tends to exercise this thing. As mentioned above, 'nonexistent' things in order to be 'real'it must be universally accepted by the people.
Mass media has been very influential. Children are fond of watching movies such as the fairy tales and superheroes. This things are not real but for them, this things are real since they are believing that there is a superhero with superpower and fantasy land where cinderilla live. It is also said that, reality is not just innate by nature or what is 'out there' but reality is done by human like us.
Philosophically, reality is contrasted with nonexistence. for example 'hell', it is known to be real although no one discovered it yet.
Media serves as one of the pattern used in order to know the reality. Whether we like it or not, media affects our everyday life_ how we think and how we be able deal with our society.
ReplyDeleteIt is not easy to distinguish the real or truth, but we should be careful to some media people who construct false information just to sustain their self interest.
Reality is the reflection of the interest of every individual, as it is accepted and acquired through the help of the media.

ReplyDeleteReality is what necessarily exist. It's the totality of things and events. As what Mr. Cuanico have stated, it is out there given. What we are facing in day-to-day life is the reality. We've been dealing with it every now and then. And media serves only as our guide. For me news is not necessarily constructed , but are based in a real occurrence. It does not imply that because media produces this supernatural things, that they are already constructing a reality . It will depend on the viewers itself; to believe or not this existing character on television.
ReplyDeletereality in media is being reflected through the occurrences of particular things that catch the attentions of the media people and that make it real, but some are making false stories for their own interest. what is being true is something that is accepted by the majority and experienced. scenes we see in the television are not all real but some are just constructed to make a non existing thing real.
ReplyDeletefantasy in the movies are or the world 'out there' really is 'there' or is only constructed by us.
Media exist in a reality.
ReplyDeleteTherefore reality sub-ces by media..
What I mean is that, media is nature in a reality. By which anything that are existing with in ..will be formed, construct and re construct .
Media is a one and big factor that affect the reality. It shapes the reality of the public and its different perceptions to a wide or broad and a variety of a significant news or an issue. It portrays the interpretation of reality, and mold it is, to be more in line with that interpretation. In short it constructs the entire way of life .. of reality that we are in.
Its on how media people present and construct such information for it to be real. People are very much dependable on media with regards on gathering information and we tend to become "Powerless" with it. What i mean is, "what we see and hear is what we believe in".
ReplyDeleteIn my own point of view, people need to be more critic and more sensitive enough on those information media is presenting, whether it was presented according to what is real or if it was re-presented to make it more convincing and real.
Indeed, Media is powerful that we people is being affected in our own views and belief but it should not be that way. Media should not overcome our views and beliefs in life, we should not be powerless. Instead, we must have our own views and understanding on those things we see and hear on media.
Media play an important role in molding peoples mind. What they presented to the people always have a great impact to them.
ReplyDeletePeople only believe in the things that they see because of their beliefs that to see is to believe. For this reason, media should construct only whats real because of its influential effects to people.Influence includes the change of the attitudes, opinions and beliefs of the people. The changes can lead to a more complicated effects to people when it take for granted.
To avoid a negative impact to the people.Media should be responsible enough in constructing reality. It should be constant always to inject a reality in peoples mind. They should not be bias sometimes to remain balance because that's what peoples need all the time.
As what the ontological approach of constructivism says by Sefan Weber 'constructed nature of the world ass an unalterable fact' which means that construction of reality is not something made by man because it is always there whether we want it or not, which is true. No one can construct reality because reality has been there even at the very beginning. No one can claim that they constructed reality even the media because what the the media does is to portray the reality. The role of the media is to show what we called reality in our society. Moreover the media has been has been very effective of making us believe that something even fiction could be real.
ReplyDeleteIs it true that media is constructing the reality, they are not giving the accurate reality in a news, instead they are giving the people the constructive reality to add the story some spice and for the people to be interested with the story.
ReplyDeleteBut because media place a big rule in our life I agree at times that media should construct the reality to give fiction to a news story. It is somehow the rule of media to re-present “something” to make it factual. Media I believe do constructive reality for some purposes, for instance in advertising they really have to construct the reality so many would patronize their product.
Though it affects people because instead of knowing the exact reality what they recognize is the constructive reality that media has manipulated.
Truly, the media is the most influential vehicle of information in the society. To the utmost extent, it even constructs and redefine realities for us.
ReplyDeleteThe media is perceived to be the channel of worth-knowing events around us. But even the media people are now believed to be on the verge of constructing events on their own, they are now believed to be great makers of news, manipulating them to support their own standpoints. This in turn constructs unreliability from the people.
As a relied agent of socialization, the media is always considered to be the trend setter: and from this viewpoint, advertisements are so much embraced and relied upon by the viewing public. In here. once again the media is a great setter of constructed reality.Though many view advertisements as nothing but promoters of 'exaggeration', brands are still patronized (even those that can't withstand it's claims ) because many believed that what the media presented is the one on the trend, therefore making them feel as 'in' in the society..
This automated 'Constructed Reality' of the media presupposes both doubt and reliability from the public..This varied perceptions from the viewing public just supports the very fact that there's none other than the Media which can influence, distort and redefine people's behavior towards REALITY...
